Radiesse is one of our options for “volumizing” the face and the hands.  As many of us are aware, over time we lose the fullness in our cheeks, lips, and virtually all parts of the face.  As a result, we start looking tired, sad and saggy.  The same process is occurring in the hands and we notice the veins and boniness increasing.  In both areas, fat between the skin and the bone diminishes significantly. (Of course, it goes to places we don’t want it, but that’s another story!) Muscle mass and bone mass get smaller over time.  The net effect is the shape of these structures change, the skin is not supported, and our “youthful vibe” is lost.  Fillers then become effective and important tools to help restore the underlying supportive volume to face and hands

Radiesse was FDA approved in 2006 as one of the first volumizers to be used as an alternative to collagen. It has a long history of success and safety.  It is made of calcium hydroxylapatite, a molecule that is found in our bones, which means it is natural to our bodies and we don’t need to worry about damage or rejection.  It is distinctly different from other fillers which are made of hyaluronic acid, and it is the only option in this subclass.  Because it is different it has a couple of characteristics that set it apart.

Of all the fillers it is the firmest, which means it lifts the most. So, for areas that need the most lifting it is an excellent choice.  I especially like it for temples, cheeks and marionette lines.  The downside of firmness is that it is not good for the lips. Another characteristic that is beneficial is that it stimulates your body to build more collagen.  More collagen no only helps the overall skin quality but enhances the longevity so that it can last 12-15 months. Like all fillers, temporary bruising and swelling can occur in the treatment areas.

Finally, Radiesse is an outstanding option for the back of the hands.  One syringe per hand and the bony look disappears, and the appearance of the veins in reduced.
