How Bellafill® Works
Bellafill® is a long-lasting filler that can improve the appearance of nasolabial folds or smile lines. The smooth collagen gel lifts and corrects the skin, restoring volume and creating a more youthful and refreshed look. In addition to treating wrinkles and fine lines, Bellafill® can also correct moderate to severe acne scarring. Its treatment of acne scars can last for up to 12 months.
Bellafill® makes use of two components when delivering its action: collagen and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) microspheres. These microspheres are injected within the collagen gel, instantly reducing fine lines and wrinkles. Over time, these microspheres will act as a “scaffold” inside the skin, triggering your body’s natural collagen production. The beads are biocompatible and remain in the skin long after the collagen gel is absorbed.
Treatment lasts just a few minutes and can conveniently be completed during your lunch break. As with all injections, minimal discomfort may occur, but many patients do not require any anesthetics. We have ice packs and topical numbing cream available to minimize discomfort. Results are typically visible immediately following treatment and can last one to five years. Bellafill® Recovery
Recovery from Bellafill® is generally straightforward, with little to no potential for downtime. That said, there are some side effects that you can experience over the next few days, which include mild redness, swelling, bruising, and slight tenderness at the injection site. These side effects are temporary and will often go away within a week.
To make your recovery easier, you may apply cold compresses to the area, as this can keep the swelling and discomfort minimal. Do not rub or massage the treated area within the first 24 to 48 hours, as this can lead to filler displacement. You should also avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, and hot baths within the next 48 hours, as this can exacerbate the swelling and bruising.
Most people can return to their daily routine right after treatment, just keep in mind that the side effects can take up to 10 days to completely fade. Potential lumps may take a couple of weeks to resolve as the microspheres settle in the skin. Make sure to follow the post-care instructions given by our providers, as this can keep the side effects at a minimum.
Bellafill® Results
Bellafill® results are often immediate, with the collagen gel offering an instant plumping effect. However, the effects are concealed by the recovery symptoms, which is why initial results take about one week to show. Wrinkles and acne scars should become smoother within two to three weeks as the collagen settles in the creases.
The results will continue improving, as the PMMA microspheres move within the skin, stimulating collagen production. You should start seeing significant changes after about three months when the initial production of collagen has finished maturing. The microspheres are non-dissolvable, which means they should continue triggering new collagen production over the years.
While many fillers require follow-up treatments every three to six months, Bellafill® can last up to five years before a maintenance treatment is needed. Even if the microsphere remains under the skin and supports it, the body’s natural collagen production can still drop as you age naturally. This makes maintenance a recommended route eventually.
