Candidates for Pico Laser

Pico Laser is an excellent option for patients who wish to minimize skin imperfections, such as acne scarring and pigmentation issues, improve skin texture and tone, and minimize the early signs of aging, like early onset wrinkles and lines.

You may be a good candidate for Pico Laser if you experience the following:

  • Acne Scarring
  • Brown Spots
  • Fine Facial Lines
  • Freckles
  • Melasma
  • Pigmented Lesions
  • Stretch Marks
  • Wrinkles
Also, if you have unwanted symptoms in other areas of concern (such as the chest, décolleté, hands, and legs), you can treat these without the discomfort and recovery time you might experience from other laser treatments. Whatever your concern area, a Pico Laser treatment will leave you with a refreshed and youthful look.

Pico Laser, like any other medical procedure, has a few contraindications. Please let Dr. Birchall know if your medical history includes any of the following conditions:

  • A hypersensitivity to infrared light
  • Medications that increase light sensitivity
  • Seizures triggered by light
  • You have Type 1 diabetes
  • You have Herpes in the treatment area
  • You have an infection in the treatment area
  • You have moles (nevi) which may be predisposed to malignant melanoma

Patients in good health with reasonable expectations of a Pico Laser skin rejuvenation treatment can be good candidates for the procedure.

How Pico Laser Works

Pico Laser’s unique combination of leading-edge light-based technology treatments targets all three layers of tissue. This includes epidermal pigment, mid-dermal wrinkles, and deep-dermal laxity. Then, the body’s natural healing process sweeps away older, damaged tissue and rebuilds it with fresh, new collagen and elastin. These are crucial building blocks of youthful skin.

The procedure is the world’s first and only picosecond aesthetic laser platform for multiple aesthetic applications, including tattoo removal, acne scar treatment, removal of pigmented lesions, and wrinkle treatment. This unparalleled breakthrough in laser technology delivers ultra-short pulse bursts of energy to the skin in trillionths of a second to gently target and break down pigment without harming the surrounding skin. Your body’s lymphatic system will naturally carry away damaged pigment cells, leaving your skin looking clearer and more even.

Pico Laser not only improves pigmentation issues and scarring, but it also helps your skin look more youthful. The laser energy delivered to your skin by the Pico Laser gently heats the lower tissue layers. This gentle heating action induces a healing in response to your skin. As a result, your skin produces more collagen and elastin.

Collagen and elastin give your skin its underlying structure, volume, and elasticity and help it look and feel hydrated. After a Pico Laser skin rejuvenation treatment, early aging features such as fine lines and wrinkles will appear smoothed and reduced, leaving you with noticeably healthier and younger-looking skin.

Pico Laser Recovery

Side effects of Pico Laser treatments are generally mild and subside quickly. The most common side effects patients report after Pico Laser treatment include temporary redness and swelling at the treatment site. Typically, these go away in less than an hour, but sometimes, they may linger for up to 24 hours.
If you experience any side effects, you can ice the treatment areas or take over-the-counter pain medications to increase your comfort. However, you will not have any specific aftercare instructions to follow after your Pico Laser treatment.

Pico Laser Results

Pico Laser results may take some time to show, as it takes about a month for the skin to regenerate and shed off the damaged cells. Collagen also takes two to three months to replenish, which is why the results are not always immediate. However, you should be able to see some improvement after two to three weeks, with peak results after about two to three months.
To make the most of your results use sun protection, as excess UV exposure can speed up the aging process. Staying hydrated also adds to skin plumpness, improving the overall texture. You may schedule yearly maintenance treatments to ensure the longevity of the results.

Are There Any Risks Associated with Pico Laser?

While all medical procedures carry some risks, Pico Laser has very few serious risks that do not occur frequently. However, one risk associated with laser treatments in general is the potential for long-term skin discoloration after your procedure. For this reason, individuals with lighter color skin tend to face fewer risks when having a laser skin treatment than individuals with darker skin since they have less pigment in their skin before the procedure. However, people with darker skin can still have a Pico Laser skin treatment. If you have darker skin and are concerned about this risk, it is recommended that you speak with Dr. Birchall about whether Pico Laser is right for you.

How Long Does the Treatment Take in the Office?

One of the many benefits of a Pico Laser treatment is that it is an effective and fast way to minimize scarring and aging signs and improve pigmentation issues. In fact, you can have a single Pico Laser treatment in as little as 15 minutes or less, making it an ideal treatment to have during your lunch hour or if you have a hectic schedule. The size of your treatment area will determine how long your Pico Laser treatment session will take. Dr. Birchall can better estimate how long your specific procedure will take during your in-person consultation and after examining you thoroughly.

How Many Pico Laser Treatments Will I Need?

Typically, Dr. Birchall will recommend that you begin with a series of three to four treatments to get the best results from a Pico Laser treatment. However, your needs may require you to have more or fewer treatments. Treatment intervals are generally two to four weeks apart, but they can be up to eight weeks apart if you have darker skin.
