Lip Filler Candidates

You are a good candidate for JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA® XC if you are 21 and over and want to enhance your lips or reduce the perioral lines above the upper lip. Patients looking for a dermal filler to improve more areas of the face can talk to Dr. Birchall about the other available filler options.

If you notice that your lips have lost volume, creating a thinner appearance that might make you look older or even perpetually angry or worried, then you might be a candidate for lip fillers. This volume loss is often due to collagen depletion in the underlying skin structure – the same issue that leads to some wrinkles. At the same time, fine lines can form around the mouth to exacerbate this aged look. These lines are usually found above the upper lip, allowing lipstick to bleed outside the lips.

JUVÉDERM®

JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA® XC was approved by the FDA for cosmetic use in the US in June 2016. However, the product has been used in Europe and Canada for many years, demonstrating the formulation’s efficacy and safety.

JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA® XC contains hyaluronic acid, which works in the underlying dermal layers to support and smooth the outer dermis. Hyaluronic acid is a substance usually found in the body, providing hydration by helping skin cells bind to water. Over time, your body produces less hyaluronic acid, leading to dryness, skin laxity, and volume loss in areas like the lips.

When VOLBELLA® XC is administered in the area above the lips, the formulation effectively smooths away the fine, vertical lines that develop as you age. As it is injected directly into the lips, JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA® XC offers subtle plumping that restores youthful volume and fullness. The good news is that JUVÉDERM® can add volume to your face while retaining the fluidity of your facial expressions. As a result, you can make all your unique and instantly recognizable expressions with a restored, volumized look and natural results.

The hyaluronic acid formulation in VOLBELLA® is a unique one known as Vycross. Vycross technology features a combination of different molecular weights of hyaluronic acid molecules, which is not seen in other dermal fillers. This combination allows for the smoother application of the product and results that tend to last longer than those provided by most JUVÉDERM® products.

Our team of injectors perform JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA® injections in our office, and they usually take just a few minutes to complete. Injections are administered via a tiny needle and focus on the superficial dermal layers, minimizing discomfort associated with the procedure. However, because of the potential sensitivity of these treatment areas, patients may request ice or a topical numbing cream before treatment if they are concerned about pain.

Restylane®

For a comprehensive treatment of your lips and the areas around your mouth, Restylane® offers a suite of hyaluronic-acid-based dermal fillers. Each of Restylane®’s products focuses on different areas of concern, such as your lips or the fine lines around your mouth, including nasolabial folds between your nose and mouth and marionette lines connecting the corners of your mouth and chin.

If you have a severe presentation of lines and wrinkles around the mouth, Restylane® Defyne can provide you with the most significant volume restoration. At the same time, it maintains the natural ease of movement, which is a Restylane® signature feature.

All Restylane® versions are simple, outpatient treatments that will not cause you significant pain or require lengthy downtime. After cleansing the areas to be treated, Dr. Birchall will inject the carefully selected amount of Restylane® product, and you can return to your regular activities afterward with no delay. Results will also appear quickly and last from six to 18 months, depending on your treatment area.

Fat Transfer

A fat transfer procedure is a good option for those seeking the most natural procedure possible with the longest-lasting results. Fat transfers can last for many years and thus, in addition to their safety and results, can give you one of the most cost-effective options in facial rejuvenation.

A fat transfer approach will use fat harvested from your own body in Dr. Birchall’s offices to fill areas around your mouth that have lost volume. Many patients like this procedure since it uses fat from their own bodies instead of man-made fillers.

Besides being a natural option to treat volume loss in the lips and mouth, fat transfer directly supplements the problematic areas with the precise component that has caused the lost volume — fat. While fat-transfer procedures will all suffer from a moderate degree of attrition — some fat will be reabsorbed by the body subtracting from your final volume — new techniques have mitigated this. By supplementing your body’s fat, Dr. Birchall can help more of the transferred fat cells survive, helping you retain more volume.
