The latest procedures in lip plumping are now available at Dermacare Medical Aesthetics. Dermacare offers three unique treatments to treat the most common lip and mouth area concerns — JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA® XC, Restylane® Silk, Refyne and Defyne, and natural fat transfer.
We have carefully selected each option based on its safety and the results it offers for our patients. We will help you choose the right formula to meet your needs during a thorough and careful consultation.
You are a good candidate for JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA® XC if you are 21 and over and want to enhance your lips or reduce the perioral lines above the upper lip. Patients looking for a dermal filler to improve more areas of the face can talk to Dr. Birchall about the other available filler options.
If you notice that your lips have lost volume, creating a thinner appearance that might make you look older or even perpetually angry or worried, then you might be a candidate for lip fillers. This volume loss is often due to collagen depletion in the underlying skin structure – the same issue that leads to some wrinkles. At the same time, fine lines can form around the mouth to exacerbate this aged look. These lines are usually found above the upper lip, allowing lipstick to bleed outside the lips.
They are known as smoker’s lines because they are typically caused by regular puckering of the lips due to puffing on cigarettes. Drinking through a straw or even pursing the lips habitually can also lead to the formation of these lines. If any of these situations apply to you, then you may be a good candidate for lip fillers.
Remember that multiple formulations can even be used simultaneously to help you achieve all your cosmetic goals in a single treatment session. If you have had a reaction to hyaluronic acid fillers in the past, discuss your concerns with Dr. Birchall to determine whether JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA® will be safe for you. We may recommend a fat transfer procedure instead to avoid any issues.
You have many choices if you want to restore the lost fullness and definition of your lips and improve fine lines. The top-tier options that Dermacare offers include JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA® XC, Restylane® Silk, Defyne, and Refyne, as well as fat-transfer procedures if you prefer the most natural approach to resolving these concerns.
For some, the lips never achieve the fullness they hope for, even in their youth. In these cases, each option we offer can help you get the volume and plumpness you’ve been hoping for. Since each formulation relies on hyaluronic acid or fat, you can expect natural results that will look like your lips — only better. Dr. Birchall or one of Dermacare’s qualified providers will administer just the right amount of filler or fat to create fullness while enhancing definition and correcting any asymmetries in the lips.
JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA® XC was approved by the FDA for cosmetic use in the US in June 2016. However, the product has been used in Europe and Canada for many years, demonstrating the formulation’s efficacy and safety.
JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA® XC contains hyaluronic acid, which works in the underlying dermal layers to support and smooth the outer dermis. Hyaluronic acid is a substance usually found in the body, providing hydration by helping skin cells bind to water. Over time, your body produces less hyaluronic acid, leading to dryness, skin laxity, and volume loss in areas like the lips.
When VOLBELLA® XC is administered in the area above the lips, the formulation effectively smooths away the fine, vertical lines that develop as you age. As it is injected directly into the lips, JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA® XC offers subtle plumping that restores youthful volume and fullness. The good news is that JUVÉDERM® can add volume to your face while retaining the fluidity of your facial expressions. As a result, you can make all your unique and instantly recognizable expressions with a restored, volumized look and natural results.
The hyaluronic acid formulation in VOLBELLA® is a unique one known as Vycross. Vycross technology features a combination of different molecular weights of hyaluronic acid molecules, which is not seen in other dermal fillers. This combination allows for the smoother application of the product and results that tend to last longer than those provided by most JUVÉDERM® products.
Our team of injectors perform JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA® injections in our office, and they usually take just a few minutes to complete. Injections are administered via a tiny needle and focus on the superficial dermal layers, minimizing discomfort associated with the procedure. However, because of the potential sensitivity of these treatment areas, patients may request ice or a topical numbing cream before treatment if they are concerned about pain.
For a comprehensive treatment of your lips and the areas around your mouth, Restylane® offers a suite of hyaluronic-acid-based dermal fillers. Each of Restylane®’s products focuses on different areas of concern, such as your lips or the fine lines around your mouth, including nasolabial folds between your nose and mouth and marionette lines connecting the corners of your mouth and chin.
What makes Restylane® a unique cosmetic treatment is that it offers different strengths and textures, allowing Dr. Birchall to treat the various areas of concern appropriately. Dr. Birchall will apply the right amount and consistency of filler to optimize your results.
By offering a wide degree of control over the application, you will enjoy high-quality, long-lasting effects that look incredibly natural. Restylane® Silk provides the finest formulation of the proprietary hyaluronic-acid-derived main ingredient. Ideally, it works with the delicate tissues of the lips, giving Dr. Birchall an excellent level of control.
For more significant lines around the mouth, Restylane® Refyne can provide more volume definition while retaining a natural flexibility that will blend easily with your own expressions. If you have a severe presentation of lines and wrinkles around the mouth, Restylane® Defyne can provide you with the most significant volume restoration. At the same time, it maintains the natural ease of movement, which is a Restylane® signature feature.
All Restylane® versions are simple, outpatient treatments that will not cause you significant pain or require lengthy downtime. After cleansing the areas to be treated, Dr. Birchall will inject the carefully selected amount of Restylane® product, and you can return to your regular activities afterward with no delay. Results will also appear quickly and last from six to 18 months, depending on your treatment area.
A fat transfer procedure is a good option for those seeking the most natural procedure possible with the longest-lasting results. Fat transfers can last for many years and thus, in addition to their safety and results, can give you one of the most cost-effective options in facial rejuvenation.
A fat transfer approach will use fat harvested from your own body in Dr. Birchall’s offices to fill areas around your mouth that have lost volume. Many patients like this procedure since it uses fat from their own bodies instead of man-made fillers.
Besides being a natural option to treat volume loss in the lips and mouth, fat transfer directly supplements the problematic areas with the precise component that has caused the lost volume — fat. While fat-transfer procedures will all suffer from a moderate degree of attrition — some fat will be reabsorbed by the body subtracting from your final volume — new techniques have mitigated this. By supplementing your body’s fat, Dr. Birchall can help more of the transferred fat cells survive, helping you retain more volume.
Recovery can vary from one person to another, and it’s also dependent on the type of filler injected. For instance, JUVÉDERM® has a smoother consistency, which often leads to a shorter recovery time (but not by long). After the treatment, the injection sites may be red, tender, and slightly swollen. Depending on your average skin sensitivity levels, you might also experience mild bruising or bumpiness in the treatment area.
When these side effects occur, they are minor and resolve on their own within a week or two for most of our patients. Staying hydrated can help with the healing, and certain pain medications can be used to alleviate discomfort. You can use cold compresses to ease the bruising but do not apply too much pressure.
Stay away from direct sunlight and exposure to hot humidity (e.g., showers and baths), as this could exacerbate the swelling. Allow a few days before exercising to lessen the risk of additional bruising. Blood thinning medication should also be avoided during recovery, as this could increase the risk of bruising.
You will immediately notice a difference in appearance after your VOLBELLA® XC treatment. However, our providers will likely place more of the formulation into your lips, knowing some of the hyaluronic acid will be absorbed immediately. This could make your lips look fuller than you would like for the first few days.
Rest assured that the fullness will settle, and your results will improve as the side effects subside. The swelling should be mostly gone within three to four days, and your lips will begin looking more natural. Final results usually appear after an average of two weeks, once the filler has completely settled and the skin has healed.
Your new look may last up to one year before you require another treatment to maintain your results. Regular maintenance procedures allow you to enjoy your fuller lips for as long as you like. In the meantime, wearing sunblock formulas designed for the lips is recommended, as excessive UV exposure can lead to hyaluronic acid breaking down.

If you receive a lip filler and decide it does not match your personality, you can choose to have the procedure reversed. HA-based lip fillers can be broken down with hyaluronidase injections, returning your lips to their previous shape.
The lumpiness or firmness you may feel can result from swelling or the product not fully settling yet. The filler should be absorbed within a week, after which the lumpiness should smooth out. Refrain from touching or applying pressure to your lips, as the migrating filler can lead to lumps.
While it hasn’t been shown that lip fillers are unsafe for pregnant women, there’s no proof that they are safe either. There is little research when it comes to testing on pregnant women, so to play it on the safe side, you should temporarily postpone your lip filler until after birth.
